AOL founder Steve Case: Orlando ‘is on the rise,’ but still needs work

Orlando’s tech and startup community left a lasting impression on AOL co-founder Steve Case this week, as the city was the first stop for his Rise of the Rest bus tour and venture capital competition created by his Washington, D.C., investment firm Revolution.

Rise of the Rest is founded by Case and backed by multiple high-profile entrepreneurs and billionaires such as Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, as well as billionaire businesswoman and founder of Spanx apparel Sara Blakely and more. Case said he started Rise of the Rest because 75 percent of all venture capital investments in the U.S. took place in California, New York and Massachusetts. But he felt something was amiss when Florida — the third-largest state — only accounted for less than 2 percent of venture capital deals. “We need more investment capital backing startups to create jobs in their communities,” Case said during a segment on MSNBC earlier this year.
