Hans Koenigsmann on May 2 confirmed what many already believed to be case for SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule after “an anomaly” occurred on April 20: “The vehicle was destroyed.”
This was the first time SpaceX confirmed the April 20 incident was, in fact, an explosion that destroyed the crew capsule after the static fire test of the capsule’s SuperDraco thrusters. No injuries were reported. The company hasn’t said exactly what went wrong and Koenignmann, SpaceX’s vice president of build and flight reliability, said the SuperDraco thrusters have been tested more than 600 times, giving the firm confidence that they work fine.
