Solar Orbiter launches on a 10-year mission to snap the first photos of the Sun’s mysterious poles

After nearly a decade in development, the European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter spacecraft is heading to the Sun, endeavoring for the first time to snap a photo of its elusive poles and solve complex questions about the mechanisms of our solar system’s star.

About 800 European spectators and 100 scientists from the European Space Agency gathered at the Space Coast Sunday evening to witness the launch of the $1.5 billion vehicle from the soon-to-be-renamed Cape Canaveral Air Force Station’s launch complex 41. Read more here.
